David
Degree: BSc (Hons.) in Computer Science, University of Bristol
Job Title: Graduate IT Trainee
Business Area: IT
Date you joined Smiths: July 2000

My route into Smiths wasn't what you would consider typical. I joined TI Group, as it was then, in 2000 as a summer job after I finished my A-levels, but that quickly turned into a gap year. That first year taught me a great deal about the IT profession.TI Group merged with Smiths in late 2001, and Smiths agreed to sponsor me for the duration of my degree, giving me various opportunities to spend time working for Smiths during the holidays various parts of the business, including in the US. When I graduated in 2004, I joined Smiths full-time. The IT graduate scheme is fairly unique in Smiths: it consists of four six-month placements in different parts of Smiths, working on something different each time. This gives me a very useful insight into the opportunities available within IT, to help me decide what path my career should take.During my first placement, I worked as a third-line technical support engineer, responsible for assisting in the handling of IT helpdesk calls, as well as administering and maintaining some of the core systems used by the business. I am now part-way through my second placement on a very different project, where I am involved with writing code for an implementation of a large financial system. It is very different from my first placement, and already, I am beginning to recognise what I enjoy doing, and what sorts of things I want to be doing in the future.Concurrently with the graduate programme, I was invited to participate in Smiths Development Programme, Horizons. This is a two-year programme of various workshops and courses designed specifically to help us to gain the skills needed to become leaders of the future. I have found this is an incredibly valuable course, as it allows me to gain not only important skills such as presentation and team-working, but also an appreciation of the "softer" skills such as dealing with people. It is also an incredible opportunity to become known by senior management of the group, who are heavily involved and supportive of the programme.Even though I'm not even half-way through my graduate programme yet, I can see that I am already reaping rewards from it, and I think that's reflected by the fact that I enjoy my job a great deal.
