We run a two-year graduate development programme that's designed to give you the best possible start to your career. It brings together graduates from across Smiths Group and gives you a bigger picture of the business. Having said that, you'll also get plenty of opportunity to explore your own division and to develop the skills you need for your role.

The programme incorporates development workshops, site visits, mentoring, project work, development planning and learning activities, where you'll be part of a team of up to six. You're encouraged to record your memories and development on an electronic journal, and you'll also have regular reviews with mentors, managers and HR, who'll play active roles in your progress.

You'll begin with a one-day workshop, attended by all the graduates, line managers and mentors. Here, you'll be welcomed to Smiths by the leaders of the business. From this point on, there will be all sorts of experiences, everything from team-building in Exmoor, to a sinking ship simulator in Portsmouth. The list of workshops is long and encompasses both traditional teaching methods and more unusual techniques. By the end, you'll have learned about understanding customers, communicating effectively, delivering products, enabling people, operating with responsibility, influencing others and engaging support.

At some point over the two years, you'll also host a site visit for GCSE students as part of an education liaison activity organised in conjunction with the Industrial Trust.

We've designed the Graduate Development Programme to give you an understanding of Smiths Group, the business world in general and your own capabilities, both as an individual and as part of a team.
