Suzanne Degree: MEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering with German Job Title: Graduate Finance Trainee Business Area: Smiths Medical International Ltd Date you joined Smiths: 09/2005
Having an engineering degree and then going into Finance may sound peculiar, however, it works quite well within a predominantly engineering firm - Smiths Group Plc.
I hadn't really heard of Smiths until I saw an advert on the CIMA website. I then delved into the Smiths website and the more I found out about the company, the more I wanted to work for them.
The Finance Scheme involves rotating around some of the parts of Smiths Group Plc so currently I am working at Smiths Medical and in October I shall be working for Smiths Detection and then the year after, somewhere else. This is a great way to find out what the business is all about and an opportunity to see how the various businesses differ.
Having had no previous experience of either Smiths or Finance, I found that I was given responsibilities very early on and was soon doing various jobs for all sorts of people including the Finance Director. I was also given opportunities to see what was happening gloabally within the company.
I've had the opportunity to change some of the procedures and challenge the way things are done as well as learning about and getting involved in the day to day finance functions.
Smiths are very keen on their finance graduates and help out with the CIMA exams, both financially and time wise.
The Graduate Development programme, Horizons, is a great way to get to know lots of people from all the different parts of Smiths - knowledge sharing and just a help at hand is always very useful. |
